Why Dizziness Deserves a Real Answer
Dizziness is one of the most common reasons adults visit a doctor, and one of the most frequently dismissed. Patients are often told it’s a normal part of getting older, or handed a prescription without anyone identifying what’s actually going wrong. Meanwhile the symptoms continue — the spinning when you roll over in bed, the unsteadiness on stairs, the fear of a fall that keeps you home.
Your balance depends on three systems working together: your inner ear, your vision, and the sensory nerves in your joints and muscles. When the inner ear portion — the vestibular system — isn’t sending accurate signals, your brain receives conflicting information about where your body is in space. The result is dizziness, vertigo, or a persistent sense that something is off.
Vestibular testing measures how well that system is working. It’s the difference between guessing at a cause and knowing one.
Symptoms Worth Testing
Schedule an evaluation if you regularly experience:
- A spinning sensation, especially when changing head position or rolling over in bed
- Unsteadiness or a feeling of being pulled to one side
- Lightheadedness when standing
- Blurred vision or difficulty focusing when moving your head
- A fall, or a near-fall you can’t fully explain
- Dizziness accompanied by hearing loss, ear fullness, or tinnitus
That last combination matters. When dizziness appears alongside hearing changes, the inner ear is very often involved — which is exactly where an audiologist’s expertise applies.
Vestibular Testing at Optimum Audiology
Dr. Kristi Mendoza and our team provide comprehensive balance and vestibular assessments at all our locations. With over 30 years of experience serving seniors and Veterans across Southern and Central California, we understand how much a balance problem can narrow a life — and how much confidence returns once you have answers.
Testing is non-invasive and performed in-office. Your evaluation may include VNG, vHIT, or VEMP, along with a hearing evaluation, since the inner ear governs both. Plan on approximately 1-hour for your appointment.
We’ll review your results with you the same day, explain what they mean in plain language, and coordinate directly with your physician, ENT, or neurologist when further care is needed.

Your Questions Answered
Frequently asked questions
With over 30 years of experience, we understand you may have questions about hearing health, treatment options, and what to expect from your visit. Dr. Mendoza and our team have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you feel informed and confident about your care.
Vestibular testing is a series of non-invasive assessments that measure how well your inner ear balance system is working. Your inner ear contains structures that detect head movement and position, then send that information to your brain. When those signals are inaccurate or inconsistent, the result is dizziness, vertigo, or unsteadiness. Testing identifies whether the problem originates in the inner ear and, when it does, which ear and which structures are involved.
The inner ear governs both hearing and balance, so the two systems share the same anatomy and often the same problems. Audiologists are trained specifically in inner ear function, which makes them well suited to identify vestibular causes of dizziness. When your symptoms include hearing changes, ear fullness, or ringing alongside the dizziness, an inner ear cause becomes considerably more likely.
Plan on approximately [DURATION] for your appointment. This allows time for a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, the testing itself, and a review of your results before you leave.
The testing is non-invasive and does not involve needles or injections. Some portions may briefly provoke the dizziness you've been experiencing — that's intentional, since we need to observe how your system responds. Any dizziness typically settles within a few minutes. Our team will explain each step before it begins and stays with you throughout.
[PREP INSTRUCTIONS — medications to hold and for how long, food/caffeine/alcohol restrictions, no eye makeup, whether to arrange a driver.] If you're unsure about any of your medications, call us at 760-503-1700 before your appointment rather than stopping anything on your own.
Many patients find it helpful to bring a family member regardless, both for the drive home and to help remember the details of the results discussion.
If you've already seen a physician, ENT, or neurologist about your dizziness, bring any records or imaging results with you. We coordinate directly with your other providers so everyone is working from the same information.
Many insurance plans cover diagnostic vestibular testing when it's medically indicated. Coverage varies by plan, and some require a physician referral for the testing to be covered. Our team can verify your benefits before your appointment and explain any out-of-pocket costs in advance. We accept most major insurance plans and work with Veterans benefits and Workers' Compensation.
We review your results with you the same day and explain what they mean in plain language. If the cause is one we can address, we'll discuss your options. If your results point toward something outside our scope — a neurological cause, a cardiovascular cause, or a condition requiring an ENT — we'll tell you directly and coordinate a referral to the right specialist. An accurate diagnosis is the goal, whether or not the treatment happens here.
