Earwax Removal
Safe, Gentle Earwax Removal in One Visit
Wax can build up until your ear feels plugged, everything sounds muffled, or your hearing aid starts whistling. Earwax removal in Apple Valley, CA takes 15 to 30 minutes. We look into the ear canal under magnification, then clear the wax with small instruments, gentle suction, or warm-water irrigation, depending on what's safest for your ear. You don't have to wear hearing aids to book, and we'll check your eardrum once the canal is clear.
Why Professional Ear Cleaning Beats Cotton Swabs
Cotton swabs and ear candles tend to push wax deeper or scratch the canal, and impacted earwax is one of the most common reasons a hearing aid seems to stop working. Our team removes it with the canal in clear view, so nothing is done blind. For hearing aid wearers, professional ear cleaning before an adjustment or Real Ear Measurement check gives an accurate reading. Patients come from Hesperia, Victorville, and Jess Ranch.
Earwax Removal FAQs
Common questions about earwax removal in Apple Valley: signs of impacted wax, which removal method we use, at-home cleaning, and earwax tips for hearing aid wearers.
Common signs of impacted earwax include a plugged or full feeling in the ear, muffled hearing that came on gradually, an earache, itching, or ringing in the ear. Hearing aid wearers often notice whistling or a device that suddenly sounds weak.
Those same symptoms can come from other problems, like an ear infection or a change in your hearing, so a quick look is the best way to know. If wax is the cause, we can usually remove it at the same visit. If something else is going on, we'll tell you and suggest a hearing evaluation or a visit to your physician. Call or text (760) 503-1700 to book.
Most patients feel little more than some pressure, a cool sensation, or a tickle. We pick the method after looking in your ear. Soft wax often comes out with gentle ear wax suction. Firmer wax may be lifted out with small instruments under magnification, and some cases call for ear irrigation, a gentle flush with body-temperature water.
If the wax is very hard, we may ask you to soften it with drops for a few days and come back, which makes removal faster and more comfortable. Irrigation isn't used if you've had a perforated eardrum or ear surgery, so tell us about your ear history when you book. If anything feels uncomfortable during the visit, say so and we'll stop.
We recommend skipping both. Cotton swabs tend to push wax further in and pack it against the eardrum, and they can scratch the thin skin of the canal. Ear candling hasn't been shown to remove wax, and it has caused burns and blockages from dripping candle wax.
For most people, ears clean themselves: wax slowly moves outward and falls away. Wiping the outer ear with a washcloth is usually enough. If you tend to build up wax, ask us about safe softening drops, or book a professional ear cleaning every few months. People who wear hearing aids or earbuds every day often build up wax faster, since the device blocks its natural way out.
Yes. Earwax removal is open to anyone, whether or not you wear hearing aids. Many patients come in simply because one ear feels plugged, though HMO plans need a doctor's referral first. The appointment takes 15 to 30 minutes at any of our four offices: Apple Valley, Jess Ranch, La Verne, or Visalia.
For hearing aid wearers, regular wax checks keep your devices working well. Wax that collects in the receiver or wax guard is a frequent cause of a weak or dead hearing aid, and we can clean the device during the same visit. If it still isn't right, see our hearing aid repairs page or call or text (760) 503-1700.
Hearing Aids Tuned to Your Ears, Not a Factory
Hearing aids only help if they're set for your ears, not generic factory settings. That's why every new fitting at Optimum Audiology includes Real Ear Measurement, a quick test with a tiny microphone that confirms the sound reaching your eardrum matches your hearing loss. We check again at every annual visit, see you for follow-ups in the first month, and most purchases include a trial period so you can hear the difference at home.
